Balzikas was founded in the 15th century and owes its name to rafts of Muslim origin. It has historical heritage such as the castle of the Viscounts of Ros and the church in the southern part of the town. Every year it is possible to attend the Easter festival.
In the vicinity of the town lies the only mountain in the region, Cabezo Gordo, which is 312 metres high. The mountain offers all the conditions for hiking and climbing. A wide panoramic view can be seen from the summit, which includes the whole of the Mar Menor. The climate of the area is defined as arid Mediterranean. The town's proximity to the sea moderates temperatures, although rainfall is very low. Balsicas is one of the driest areas in the country.
