Benahavis is a mountain village 7km from the coast, located between Marbella, Estepona and Ronda. Benahavis was founded by Arabs at the end of the 11th century. The village was closely linked to Andalusia's Arab past and especially to Marbella, a municipal area. Until Philip II granted it the so-called "Charter of the Pueblo". The castle's strategic location attracted the attention of Catholic monarchs who were intent on conquering the last Moorish kingdoms in the south of the Iberian peninsula. A notable feature of the village is La Aldea.
