Marbella lies on the slopes of the coastal mountain range, which includes Bermeia, Palmitara, Royal, White and Al Podjata. Due to the proximity of the mountains to the coast, the town has a large gap between the north and south sides, providing views of the sea and mountains from almost every part of the town. The old town of Marbella comprises the ancient city walls and the two historic suburbs of Barrio Alto and Barrio Nuevo to the east. The ancient walled city retains much of the same layout as it did in the 16th century. Around the Plaza de los Naranjos is the town hall, built in 1568.
