Mijas was founded in prehistoric times by the Tartessians. The remains of the original fortification are still visible in parts on the outer wall of the town. The mineral wealth of the area attracted the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians to the village, as described in the geography of Ptolemy of the second century. Michas' climate, due to its proximity to the sea, is characterised by semi-tropical temperatures with winter days mostly warm and hot and pleasant, and days of hot or very hot weather from May to October.
