Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia, the second most populous city in Spain and the Iberian Peninsula after Madrid and the tenth in the European Union. Barcelona has a history stretching back over 4000 years. Barcelona has a small part of its municipality on the Llobregat slope of the Collserola mountain range. The city is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, about 120 km south of the Pyrenees mountain range and the border with France, on a small coastal plain.
