Masarron has been inhabited since the ancient Paleolithic period. There are many caves: la Cueva de la Permera and la Cueva de Los Tollos. An important structure from this period is the Castle of Veles, now visited and explored by tourists. The Muslim conquest of a large part of the Iberian Peninsula in 711 made Mazarron a part of the country of Al-Andalus under a Muslim government. For this reason, much of the architecture and legacy of Oriental Arab culture has remained in the city.
